National Hockey Centre

Giblin Group has worked alongside Hockey New Zealand, Harbour Hockey Charitable Trust and North Harbour Hockey Association providing strategic advice on funding, collateral development and funding applications.

The National Hockey Centre is a redevelopment of the North Harbour Hockey Stadium at Rosedale Park, Albany, Auckland.  It is a collaborative project that has seen Hockey New Zealand working alongside the Harbour Hockey Charitable Trust and North Harbour Hockey Association, which owns and manages the stadium.

The proposed redevelopment project was well underway when NZTA decided to take part of Rosedale Park – the part where the new building was to go – for the new northern motorway. This delayed the project but did not deter the hockey organisations from finding an alternative site and proceeding with community engagement and consultation on the project.

There is a clear need for the National Hockey Centre. The existing stadium is at capacity for the local community, Hockey New Zealand is in need of a home for its high-performance programme and in order for New Zealand to host world-class events, New Zealand requires a number of hockey facilities throughout the country that have the infrastructure to allow the events to be undertaken in a cost-effective manner. North Harbour Stadium has a history of successfully hosting these events, but it does not now meet international specifications for a Tier 1 venue.

The benefits of the project will be three-fold; a home for hockey’s national high-performance programme, a venue that will see NZ attract world-class hockey events and a future-proofed community facility for North Harbour hockey.

Sport NZ is a strong supporter of the project, as is the Auckland City Council. Both have been involved at a strategic level as well as providing significant funding for the project.

Since 2014, Giblin Group has worked alongside Hockey New Zealand, Harbour Hockey Charitable Trust and North Harbour Hockey Association providing strategic advice on funding, collateral development and funding applications. Giblin Group has also assisted the three Auckland Hockey Associations in the presentation of their Regional Facilities Plan 2014-2025 to Auckland Council and other stakeholders.

During our engagement with the hockey project, Giblin Group has developed:

  • A National Hockey Centre Revenue Generation Strategy, which outlined funding and sponsorship streams and provided a blueprint for securing these;
  • Sponsorship documents for both the National Hockey Centre and Auckland Regional Hockey Facilities Plan;
  • A Social Impact Report to strengthen funding applications;
  • A presentation for the region-wide proposal on maintenance and development of Auckland Hockey facilities;
  • Successful funding applications to Foundation North ($1M) and the Lottery Significant Projects Fund ($1.75M).
