The Keirunga Gardens Arts and Craft Society Inc engaged Giblin Group to develop a feasibility study for their proposed building project, which would see the organisations facilities in Keirunga Gardens, Havelock North rebuilt.

The buildings had been badly damaged by fire in 2016, and the proposal included further development of a gallery/workshop space which had been part of the Society’s plans before the fire.

The Keirunga arts and crafts centre has always been an important part of the region, with its historical significance and as a home for artists. The buildings were iconic, and while the fire destroyed some of that heritage, the new project has created a facility that is once again special in the hearts of artists from throughout the region and the country. The total cost of the project was $1.357M.

The construction of the new theatre was keenly awaited by users as was the upgrade of the purpose-built green room and a centralised technology area which allowed local and national touring theatre companies to perform at Keirunga and put the boutique theatre back into the community events programme.

To ensure the redevelopment of the new studios and theatre meet users’ expectations, it was important that a wide-reaching and thorough consultation programme was undertaken.

KGACS had engaged and consulted with its members about the plans for redevelopment, often in the form of verbal presentations to various committees. There was no formal plan in place for requesting and gathering feedback on the proposal and Giblin Group was required to coordinate this aspect of the consultation process during the development of the feasibility study.

A simplified project and operational risk registry was developed for the project as was a comprehensive list of opportunities for the organisation once the project was complete.

The redevelopment has bought tangible benefits to the community in the areas of health, social and cultural wellbeing, economic investment and environmental enhancement. The location of the Keirunga Creative Hub within a beautiful garden is an additional asset that the organisations using Keirunga can appreciate.
